This has absolutely nothing to do with music or gear, but I just wanted to publicly vent about an issue I have with the Mennen Corporation. Since I was a teenager my favorite deodorant was Spice Scent Speed Stick by Mennen. Unfortunately, my beloved Spice Scent Speed Stick was inexplicably discontinued several years ago.
I wasn't aware of the situation at first, I just noticed that it was getting harder and harder to find. I even had a phase where I searched for it relentlessly on the Internet, like it was an obsolete germanium transistor or something. I finally called the Mennen Corporation and was told that Spice Scent Speed Stick had indeed been discontinued, but they had a new fragrance that was very similar called Alpine Force. So I begrudgingly adjusted myself to using Alpine Force.
Now, you can probably imagine the severe case of déjà vu I had when I started to discover that Alpine Force was becoming a rare commodity. I went through the same routine of relentless Internet searching. Many online companies still have the product listed. I ordered a case of 24 sticks of Alpine Force from one company, only to be refunded a couple weeks later because the product was, in fact, out of stock. So to the makers of Mennen Speed Stick, if you're listening, you just lost a lifelong customer.

Tom,
ReplyDeleteThey know you'll come back. Where are you going to go, Right Guard spray? As a lifelong speedsticker myself, I know there's no real replacement for that morning swipe of ovally goodness. Just hold your nose, close your eyes, and pretend.
Will Workforgear
this was a window into a world i know little about . . . but it has made me paranoid enough that i might order a lifetime's worth of Redken All Soft, the shampoo AND the conditioner. I would surely be in a terrible quandary without it.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! I completely agree! I was lost when "Sport Talc" in plain deodorant form disappeared ages ago, and had finally found a home in Alpine Force, which I loved. When I found it, I bought like 30, and am just using my last one now. I found your post searching for more. GRRRRR! What "ovally goodness" will I use now?
ReplyDeleteDear Rant,
ReplyDeleteI had to respond because your blog could have been written by me. I was searching on the Internet for Speed Stick Spice and Google took me to your blog.
BTW, Mennen is also recently discontinued SS Musk, which has been available up to now. I was able to buy a six-pack of SS Musk on-line for $15 + shipping which is not a bad price.

My plight exactly as well.
ReplyDeleteDown to my last alpine force. Found it availble at amazon.com, by googling "mennen speed stick alpine force"
It also lead me to your rant that is so very similar to my experience.
I keep holding out hope that there will be yet another variant of the original spice.
I'm in the same boat and was a die hard fan of Spice until it was discontinued. Then I used Musk. Now it's been discontinued. I'm going to email the Mennen's Speed Stick Product Manager. It's time they hear the Voice of the Long-time Loyal Customer.
ReplyDeleteBrad, please do (and you can point them to this blog).
ReplyDeleteHave to agree wholeheartedly. I was a Speed Stick Spice man myself. Since they discontinued it I've adjusted to using the Regular scent, but it doesn't even come close to the wonderfulness that was Spice.
ReplyDeleteSpice is on ebay now.
ReplyDeleteMy father-in-law is a diehard Musk user and I just finished combing the city's discount stores and lesser-known pharmacies for the remaining stock.
ReplyDeleteCame up with 17 sticks!
The Mennen products in the 1960s like Mennen Face Conditioner and the squeeze bottle anti-perspirant//deodorant had the unique Mennen scents and now you cannot even get the original flavor in anything other than deoderant in the speed stick and it seems to lack the original scent. Who comes up with all these different versions of speed stick? It would be nice if Mennen would at least continue to provide some of the original items for original customers.
ReplyDeleteRight on!
DeleteIt looks like Mennen has discontinued the traditional "Fresh" and replaced it with a "Power Fresh" that stinks. Another life long customer gone from Mennen (15+ years using their brand.)
ReplyDeleteAnd so the same now goes for sport talc. Hate power sport... On to old spice I guess...
ReplyDeleteYup!
DeleteBeen using sport talc as long as I can remember...20ish years...yeah, I am a little annoyed.
Deletealso came across this while spending more wasted time searching for Fresh Scent. Just got a note from company that had it avail on their website that it is, in fact, discontinued. Would you believe it has been the main stay for 30 YEARS!! now gone. i need at least a therapy group to get past this!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, the Power Fresh STINKS !!!
AMEN! Sport Talc and Fresh (NOT Power Fresh) were great. I hope they hear the complaints and bring these back. The reviews of the new ones so far seem universally terrible. I actually complained to Colgate-Palmolive about it.
ReplyDeleteDitto - god I miss the Sport Talc. The new ones all smell the same, like mint-scented ass. Thanks Colgate...
DeleteCompletely agree!
DeleteSme here. I ordered 10 Sport Talc from Walmart online and I received 10 of their power sport sticks. They are going right back. Another life long customer gone Colgate!
ReplyDeleteCheckout Walmart. I just bought mennen musk deoderant today - May 9, 2013, It cost $!.98. Either the store is in a time-warp or they have brought it back for the customers.
ReplyDeleteI am in Canada - have been using the musk scent for as long as I can remember....I will start scouring the discount stores!!
DeleteDitto here, using Fresh Scent since the 80s. The new lineup stinks and burns my arm pits. Bye bye Mennen.
ReplyDeleteRight! Musk was my smell - I even bought a cologne to match! I've popped more tops, and huffed more icy/breezy/springy/sproty perfumed power-stinks than my olfactory glands can handle. Mennen, you're loosing a long-time customer. And the rest of you manufacturers, don't rejoice just yet; I fumble 1 in 3 of those st*p*d, form-fitting freshness caps onto the drug-store floor.
ReplyDeleteI'll check wal-mart, as one of the above posters suggested, and ask my sister to keep a look out, south of the border... but wow; my life needed one more layer of complication. Thanks Mennen.
I thought I was the only one who was upset about Colgate discontinuing Sport Talc. I can't find anything remotely close. Colgate, you've lost my business, and I was going through 20+ sticks a year.
ReplyDeleteAnother person upset about losing Sport Talc, and another lost customer Mennen/Colgate. I'm currently using Sure unscented, which is an inferior substitute and has absolutely no scent at all. At least Sport Talc had a very mild scent to it. Has anyone found a better substitute?
ReplyDeleteDo they ever explain WHY they discontinued SpeedStick Musk?
ReplyDeleteSport Talc was the ultimate for me! Used it for years. All the new smells seem to have the stink of citrus or whatever mixed in that makes my girlfriend's nose wrinkle-up and has her asking me where is my fresh deodorant. Hard to find something as neutral as Sport Talc, with a fresh smell that doesn't have the sweet-sour smell of citrus or whatever under it, like the new sticks seem to have. Mennen... go back to your rock-solid, popular scents and please give up on the alchemy experiments... thanks in advance...
ReplyDeleteSport Talc was the best...what are they thinking? Why are the products I have been using happily for so many years being phased out despite so many protests? I guess there aren't enough of us!
ReplyDeleteSport Talc definitely was the best. Colgate-Palmolive lost another lifetime customer over this. I probably used 20+ sticks a year! Bring back the Sport Talc!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI found this blog through a search as well. I got something for you guys. Just like you I was so upset that what I considered to be the best slelling men's deodorant ever was discontinued. I tried many over the years and never found anything like it. Nothing near as nice smelling. Last week I ran out of my usual old spice. I decided to try a new one and just grabbed it off the shelf. It's Axe Kilo (not the clear deodorant only) but the Dry white antiperspirant / deodorant. I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a total surprise. It's was deja' vu. It's about 90% identical to the old Speed Stick Spice! It's not as spicy totally, but a bit more a hint of citrus but the overall smell is extremely similar I was not prepared for that. Has a hint of spice but again ... very similar. Get it while you can I bought 10 more. It may be discontinued so go get it.
ReplyDeleteJust found a lot of 5 cool spice speedstick. I ordered one lot, but there are two lots left. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DISCONTINUED-SPEED-STICK-DEODORANT-FOR-MEN-BY-MENNEN-COOL-SPICE-lot-of-5-/321623848451?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae2467603
ReplyDeleteDUDE! Thanks for the tip. I jumped on those suckers and now they're MINE MINE MINE!, lol! I'll have to do a blog update about it when they arrive.
DeleteLOL, glad I could help! I have an old almost empty one in my drawer. Every so often I open it and it takes me back to the early 90's. Can't wait to get my lot. I hope they're not too dried out.
DeleteThey came yesterday, slightly dried on top but still very usable:)
ReplyDeleteI got mine as well. Same thing... The thing I found curious is these have a flattened top, and there was no inside plastic piece. The last ones I got on eBay (see this post - http://blog.formusiciansonly.com/2011/11/thats-right-i-paid-20-for-mennen-cool.html) had the inside plastic protector piece and were slightly rounded on the top, like you usually see, but the deodorant had dried up and evaporated a bit along the sides of the stick. So if you shook the Speed Stick, the deodorant inside would clunk around a little.
DeleteJudging by the look, these are older than the ones you bought before. My old one is the same container as these but had a sticker for the label rather than the print right on the plastic.
DeleteI'm still looking for the original. I've tried a lots of others, but they made my armpits itchy. I don't don't use deodorant any more, so luckily, I found a girlfriend with bad sniffler. To the rest of the world I say..........Go fuck yourself and deal with it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we MAY get the original Fresh Scent back. I was shopping at the dollar tree yesterday and noticed they had a bin of the Clean scent and a bin of the original Fresh Scent both with the new style label (Not the power label). The problem was that the Fresh scent all had the Clean scent blue caps and contained the Clean scent inside. This is why I am guessing they were at the dollar tree. But there is a new label for the original Fresh scent so I'm guessing it is coming right around the corner.
ReplyDeleteMennen Speed Stick Power Ultimate Sport the replacement for Sport Talc stinks. Can't get the stench out of my nose. Makes me want to vomit. One guy said it smelled like citrus ass!!!! I agree. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI sent an email to colgate regarding the fresh scent I had been using at least 20 years. They said they discontinued because of sales volume. They said they will send a coupon for one other new formulations (uggh). Please go their site and complain on customer feedback. Might help
ReplyDeleteSo what is the current best alternate to "Sport Talc". I'm really craving it.
